Section 8: Acousto-Optic Devices

Acousto-optic devices can be used for a lot of the same applications as electro-optic modulators such as light modulators, beam deflectors, tunable filters, spectral analyzers, and signal processers. They can also be used to modulate a laser beam, but are much slower at modulation than electro-optic modulators (~ 3 orders of magnitude lower). The difference between these is that the acousto-optic modulator uses an RF field and in the electro-optic modulator a dc field is used.
