Operating Characteristics

In typical optical communications systems, Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers are used, and thus would normally be a good material for discussion in this amplifier section. However, because Agrawal’s “Nonlinear Fiber Optics” book discusses the characteristics of Er-doped fibers much better than I could ever hope to do, I will be discussing Yb-doped fibers instead! These are more commonly used in high-power amplification applications, for reasons I will explain below.

Table of Contents

  1. Pumping Requirements
  2. Gain Spectra
  3. Amplifier Gain
  4. Amplifier Noise
  5. Multichannel Amplification
  6. Other Fiber Amplifiers
