Section 6: Principles of Mode-locking

Mode-locking in ultrafast optics is an important subject because this is how the short pulses are obtained from an oscillator! As it turns out though, a lot of smart people over many years have all made their contributions on the best method to mode-lock, so we have a lot to learn about the types of mode-locking available to us.

Table of Contents:

  1. Active Mode-Locking
  2. Passive Mode-Locking: Saturable Absorbers
  3. Passive Mode-Locking: Optical Kerr Effect
  4. Mode Locking Effects in Fiber Lasers
  5. Few-Cycle Mode-Locking
  6. Mode-Locked Frequency Combs
