Section 4: Self-Phase Modulation

It it is much too nerdy to actually say it is, BUT, if I were to say that I had a favorite effect on pulse propagation, it would be SPM. Self-phase modulation (SPM) is an effect in fibers that results from the intensity dependence of the refractive index, which then leads to spectral broadening. The effects of SPM are commonly combined with GVD to create some very interesting and useful results. There are also a number of highly used applications for SPM, so read on to find out more about this crazy physical phenomenon!

  2. Effect of Group-Velocity Dispersion
  3. Self-Steepening
