Section 5: Electro-Optics

The electro-optic effect describes how, in the presence of an applied electric field, the properties of the crystal and how light propagates within are changed. Mathematically, this is described by changes in the dimension and orientation of the index ellipsoid, which we learned about in the “Interactions of Anisotropic Media and Light” section of this website. This effect is taken advantage of in electro-optic devices, which are important in a wide variety of areas.
